Rumors refuted: Can you sit back and relax if you install run-flat tires? Fake, run-flat tires are not actually run-proof!
Mar 27,2023

At present, many luxury brands on the market use run-flat tires. On the one hand, these tires have a relatively higher safety factor than ordinary tires, and on the other hand, they can save a certain amount of trunk space. But does run-proof tire mean you are not afraid of puncture? When using run-flat tires, is there really no need for a spare tire?
Explosion-proof does not mean that it will not explode, the real function must be clear
I believe many consumers will be misled by the word "explosion-proof" for run-flat tires, thinking that run-flat tires really won't puncture. In fact, the full name of run-flat tires is run-flat tires, and the English abbreviation is RSC. Generally, if the tire has the RSC logo printed on the sidewall of the tire, it is a run-flat tire.
Although many people habitually refer to run-flat tires as run-flat tires, this does not mean that run-flat tires will not blow out at all. Regarding this point, we must first clarify the role of run-flat tires, which is to ensure that the vehicle can still travel at a low speed for a certain distance by relying on the thick sidewalls and internal structural support when the tire is leaking or out of air. To put it simply, run-flat tires are not explosion-proof, but because the sidewalls have been treated, the chance of explosion-proof is smaller. In the event of air leakage, lack of air, or bulges, the tires still need to be replaced in time.
How to choose is the key, safety awareness cannot be less
Since run-flat tires are not run-proof, do consumers still need to choose run-flat tires? To answer this question, first look at a set of data. When the vehicle travels at a speed of more than 160 km/h and the front tire blows out, the mortality rate can reach 100%. 46% of accidents on highways are caused by tire failure, of which tire blowout accounts for 70% of the total. In other words, although there is still a certain chance of tire puncture, compared with ordinary tires, puncture-proof tires can improve driving safety to a certain extent.
At the same time, the spare tire saved after using run-flat tires can further optimize the front-to-rear weight ratio of the car body and increase storage space. Therefore, it is not difficult to understand that many luxury brands make run-flat tires standard. Now that there are so many benefits of run-flat tires, should vehicles blindly pursue run-flat tires as standard? This is not true. It is not advisable to be overly superstitious about run-flat tires. Consumers should develop a good habit of checking tires regularly, pay attention to the service life and condition of tires, and develop a good safety awareness.
The cost is high and uncomfortable, but traditional tires are also practical
Besides, run-flat tires aren’t all advantages. In particular, thicker sidewalls make the tires harder, which is not conducive to later tire repairs. Secondly, due to cost constraints, many run-flat tires are not cheap. Therefore, currently only many luxury brands have them as standard equipment, and entry-level family cars are only equipped with ordinary tires.
At the same time, the use of run-flat tires also has certain requirements for the adjustment of the car's suspension. Thicker sidewalls have worse shock resistance and reduced comfort than traditional tires. At the same time, some hard impacts caused by the road will be directly borne by the suspension. . If an ordinary family car wants to replace run-flat tires, the suspension must be readjusted to ensure safety.
